The Young Science Achievers Program® is a non-profit organization that began in 1988 at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey.
Our mission is to inspire and encourage all students to pursue fields of studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While we focus on encouraging students from under-represented groups in STEM, the program is open to all students. (See qualification rules by clicking on the Getting Started Tab at the top of this page)
The program provides high school students (grades 9 through 12) with the resources, technical support, and mentoring to help students succeed in carrying out an authentic STEM research or invention project in a field of their choice. Targeting women of all ethnicities and African American, Hispanic, or Native American students, YSAP® offers grants to high school students for the purchase of equipment and materials to conduct STEM research while receiving mentoring by professional scientists and engineers from academic or industrial research institutions.
High school science teachers play an integral role in overseeing the year-long process and ensuring that all experiments are always conducted in a safe manner an in accordance with national and international protocols for research. At the conclusion of the year’s project, the purchased equipment and materials remain at the student’s high school permanently for use by future students.
Students in the YSAP program gain experience in formulating budgets, writing authentic STEM research proposals, interacting with STEM professionals and in preparing final research reports and presentations. Student are required to present their work at a STEM research symposium at the end of the year and compete for awards given at an annual celebration. YSAP students in the New York and New Jersey area participate in our annual STEM research symposium held at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. (If you live in the Dallas Fort Worth area or the greater Chicago area, please visit our Program Locations tab at the top of this page for details about special events sponsored in your area by YSAP.)
By providing a positive, supportive, and successful experience in STEM research, this program provides valuable experience that will help students shape career choices and encourage more students to consider to pursue fields of study in STEM.
