The Young Science Achievers Program® is a nonprofit organization that evolved from the Bell Labs Science Grant Program that was started in 1988.

The mission then and the mission now is to inspire and encourage groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math to pursue careers in these fields.

This program provides high school students with resources, technical support, and mentoring to help students succeed in executing a science project. Targeting women of all ethnicities and males of African American, Hispanic, or Native American descent, YSAP® offers grants to high school students for the purchase of equipment and materials to do science research while receiving mentoring from professional scientists.

High school science teachers play an integral role in overseeing the whole process and monitoring experiments for safety. At the conclusion of the year's project, the purchased equipment and materials remain in the student's high school permanently.

Students gain experience in formulating budgets, writing formal proposals, and public speaking. They present a poster session at the end of the year and receive awards for well-written reports. By providing a positive, supportive, and successful experience in science, this program hopes to influence the students to choose careers in science and technology.
