What:

The Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs Tours is designed to inspire, share knowledge and transform the way young students think about science and the future of technology. The tours are designed to include a brief history of key Bell Labs inventions and discoveries and an introduction to the major areas of research at Bell Labs as well as a discussion on Environmentally Green projects taking place in Murray Hill, New Jersey. At the end of the tour, we will have a short question and answer period followed by lunch (provided to students and teachers).

We will also cover a short Q&A period. at the end. The tour includes the following spots:

• Bell Labs Showcase-
• Anechoic Chamber-
• Green Projects By MH Green Team-Compost station, Solar Power System, etc.
• Wireless lab tour and Demo
• Q&A session-Career building

Bell Labs High Tech Showcase-a fascinating brief high-tech history showcase!!

Bell Lab showcase includes such devices, like the prototype of the original telephone device invented by Alexander Graham Bell; the first transistor; the Western Electric sound system and projector for movies that made the ‘talkies’ possible; a helmet and radio device for airplanes, circa 1917; computer chips; innovations relating to the Hubble telescope and space exploration; a section featuring a Technical Oscar from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, a Grammy from The Recording Academy and an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, etc. The white touch board/screen is built to show people publications, patents and photographs etc.

Anechoic Chamber-A MUST see!!!

Built in 1940, the Murray Hill Anechoic Chamber is the world’s oldest wedge-based anechoic chamber. The name “anechoic” literally means “without echo”. The interior room measures approximately 30 feet high by 28 feet wide by 32 feet deep. The exterior cement and brick walls are about 3 feet thick to keep outside noise from entering the chamber. Large fiberglass wedges mounted on the interior surfaces of the chamber absorb echoes or reflections. The anechoic chamber has been used to for psychoacoustic work relating to loudness. Fundamental work by Bell Labs in this area led to the establishment of the standard loudness contours that are still in use today. The chamber has also been used to measure loudspeaker and microphone directivity and frequency response functions, simulated concert hall acoustics and sound propagation over impedance surfaces. The invention of the electret microphone and further work in directional microphone systems were measured and verified in this chamber.
